Why Do People Like Music?

Watch this video and notice that everyone, when they hear the music, starts smiling. Music lights people up. It brings them joy, inspiration, fun, happiness. People are also deeply moved my music. Their emotions go grab their souls and many times they feel sorrow because music restores memories of past loves and loved ones, of experiences that were seminal in their lives, of joys long ago gone but still living inside. It’s a trite phrase to say that music is the universal language, and yet people respond to music with lyrics written on other languages, performed in other languages because they recognize the language of music. Music in western civilization is mostly diatonic and chromatic, in the Asia and the East, it’s mostly pentatonic. Doesn’t matter. The music travels around the world and people recognize it everywhere. The rhythmic music of Africa is so stirring, everyone wants to dance when they hear it. Music—the common understanding of all the world.
